Welcome to the St. Margaret Sailing Club
The Rhumbline - May 2012 - 01
Written by Steve Perrott

With the 2012 sailing season about to launch, your Board of Directors has decided to embark on a new communications strategy to keep you, the membership, apprised of upcoming events, decisions of note pertaining to management and governance, and other newsworthy tidbits relating to Club activities. Well, perhaps it’s not so much new as much as a new combination of former strategies.

Yes, I am simply referring to a fresh approach to the Club newsletter that we intend to get out to you in a more systematic and regular manner. We have decided, after considerable thought and certain sadness, to name this new electronic newsletter the Rhumbline, in honour of its beloved but languishing paper-format, snail-mail, predecessor.

Commodore's Message

Welcome to St. Margaret Sailing Club! Our club is located on the pristine waters of St Margaret’s Bay with its superb conditions for sailors and boaters of all ages and interests. From foundation more than 50 years ago the club has grown and prospered with a vibrant and active membership, a beautiful club house, and outstanding docks and marina facilities.

We offer one of the region’s strongest junior sailing programs ranging from beginner to those for young sailors eager to hone their competitive skills, as well as adult learn-to-sail, of which our Set Sail program has proved to be immensely popular. We have an active keel boat racing fleet with Wednesday evening and week-end races throughout the spring, summer and fall. As well we have many cruising members who enjoy our waterfront and mooring facilities as well as our club house hospitality.

SMSC has been home to many competitive National and International championships over the years, bringing visitors and their friends and families to the Bay from the world’s four corners. In 2011 these included the CYA Trihedral Youth and National championships bringing 200 of Canada’s top sailing athletes to Nova Scotia. And of course “The Bay, The Wind, The Regatta” is a staple annual event for the region’s developing dinghy competitors; likewise the St. Margaret’s Annual Keel Boat Regatta “SMAKR” draws entries from the area for those who have advanced to larger craft.

A new year is upon us; our new leadership team was elected at last December’s Annual General Meeting. Our board and executive are working hard to make 2012 another banner year, with new developments in social programs and club activities which will make our club and its facilities an even more attractive, interesting and welcoming home for our members and guests. At the same time we will continue to develop and strengthen junior sail, our racing fleet, waterfront and regattas.

Please explore our website for more information on our club and its activities, and our schedule of events for 2012. If you have any questions please ask any member of our executive or contact me directly.

SMSC is Awarded the 2011 CYA Chisholm Trophy for Excellence in Race Management
Written by Dave Lane

I had the privilege this past weekend of attending the Canadian Yachting Association's national awards banquet in Toronto. Our club has again been awarded a national trophy related to our dinghy regattas, in particular we were awarded the:

"Chisholm Trophy for Excellence in Race Management"

The citation for this new award is below. We should all be proud of what our small club achieves at the national and international level.
