Following a reception of gourmet hors d’oeuvres and champagne, and a fine meal presented by Chef Burton, as your outgoing Commodore, I offered my appreciation to members for their continuing Club support. Annually, at the Commodore’s Ball, three awards are presented as special recognition for volunteer support shown throughout the year.
The “Bucket”, awarded for efforts typically unsolicited, but spontaneous and constant, this year went to Mr. Barry Baker. Along with his responsibility for Membership, Barry volunteers for most events, hosts social events, primes pumps, paints ceilings and just shows up when least expected and without fanfare. Barry and his wife Marcia spend countless volunteer hours in support of their Club.
The “Copernais Cup” is awarded for special support to Club Regattas. Along with regular Youth Sailing Regattas, SMSC annually hosts SMAKR, a regional keel boat competition. Mr. Bill Bean is always the first to volunteer his support and regularly serves as official “O.D” for this keelboat regatta, spending many hours obtaining sponsors, and organizing participant registration in order to ensure a successful event. Bill also played a key role in securing sponsorship for the 2009 World Laser Championship.
The “Commodore’s Cup” is awarded each year as recognition for special and exemplary service on an ongoing basis. This year the award was presented to Mr. David Lane. Dave has spent endless hours on several projects including; a rewrite of the club by-laws; co-chairing, alongside his wife Michelle, our summer adult learn to sail program; scoring regattas and club keel boat racing; and volunteering his service for most events. Dave and his wife somehow find time to sail regularly, cruising and racing on our beautiful Bay. Notably, Dave has been the mastermind of the new club website, offering a new face for the membership and community. David received a standing ovation from his peer members as a show of their appreciation.
My sincere thanks to this year’s three award recipients, and to all the volunteers who make St. Margaret Sailing Club a special place. |
