June E-Letter for Members and Friends of Saint Margaret Sailing Club1. Waterfront and Training Centre Development Leap Ahead! Those of you who haven’t been at the Club in the last month will be struck by the hustle-bustle of activities and the real growth, in very tangible terms, of our infrastructure development. Although the last year has included a lot of nail biting, our dauntless Commodore has led the Executive through a number of tough but exciting decisions. As a result we have been able to move ahead on everything for which the membership had hoped- no unnecessary frills but including all functional options so that we don’t have regrets in a couple of years time about “why didn’t we do that when we had the chance?” In addition to Wayne, the membership owes a debt of gratitude to Suther Yuill who has applied his considerable talents and hundreds of hours of volunteer time to make our long-held vision a reality. For more details about waterfront development, including a checklist of activities progress and details about leasing slips, please visit our website here. 2. The Nautel Laser Worlds - No Longer a Theoretical Proposition!…Talk about nail-biting! Well, it is all coming together because of the massive investment of time and talent of the many, many volunteers who are committed to making this not only the largest, but also the best managed, sailing event in Canadian history. These volunteers will need to redouble their efforts with events now just weeks away but even they cannot pull it off without more help. You guessed it - we are looking for volunteers! Why not consider catching the “buzz” and being part of something of which we can all be proud for years to come? To learn about how to volunteer, including the many different roles you can play, visit the Nautel Worlds Laser World Championships Web Site Volunteer page at the following link. If you have questions that can’t be addressed at the site, please feel free to contact Volunteer Director Rhonda Dennis at 826-1346 3. Upcoming Rhumb LineWhile on the topic of the Worlds, the next Rhumb Line, intended to go to press before the end of July, will focus on our big event. Although some stories are already lined up, Editor Heather White needs more. Please consider submitting a piece to Heather, now rather than later. Let’s remember that a lot of work goes into producing our newsletter, and that last minute crunches, particularly those that involve waiting for promised stories, adds undue stress to the editing process. Stories that involve a “human interest” component (as opposed to the purely descriptive reporting of events) are especially invited. Please contact Heather at heatherwhite09 AT gmail DOT com4. Seamanship Race- July 1stPlease consider coming out for next Wednesday’s Seamanship Race. Things you may want to include in your inventory for this race are: Compass Chart of St. Margaret’s Bay Bosun chair Swimsuit Rope Tender Memo Pad Anchor If you do not have access to all of this equipment, we will have a penalty system in place to accommodate you. Remember this is a FUN race! 5. Senior Fleet CommunicationsDave Lane has set-up a list serve based out of our website for communication amongst the senior fleet. This should greatly enhance the ability of the senior fleet to communicate with less fuss than has been the case in the past. Dave has already entered the email addresses of those who have raced this year, but appreciates that others may also wish to be included. If you wish to join the list serve, simply proceed to the Senior Fleet Racing page (under the mail Senior Fleet tab) and click the “join our mailing list” hot link under “Resources for Racers” (or simply use the link provided here).6. Regatta for The Cure- Shearwater Yacht Club- July 11, 2009We have received an invitation from the Shearwater Yacht Club to participate in their Regatta for The Cure, to be held on July 11, 2009. Although this regatta for breast cancer is already well-established internationally, this will be the first time ever that it is being hosted in Atlantic Canada. For more information check the Shearwater Club’s website at www.syclub.ca or contact Event Coordinator Amanda Quarmby-Bennet at ajq AT eastlink DOT ca 7. Check your Calendars- SMAKR, August 8-9, 2009The 2009 SMAKR Committee, chaired by the capable Bill Bean, is busily preparing for this year’s event. With all the (understandable) hoopla about this year’s Worlds Event, let’s not forget our own annual premier event. More announcements about SMAKR will come soon; for now, lock the weekend away in your schedule so you can join in on this year’s top senior event.Steve Perrott Heather White |
