August E-Letter for Members and Friends of Saint Margaret Sailing Club

1.   SMAKR- This Weekend!

Our premier event is upon us and the long-term forecast is looking pretty darn good! (though nobody should be betting on it, especially with the year we’ve had!). Bill Bean and his committee have put together a terrific event that promises to be a pile of fun come rain, shine, or fog as tick as can be. Saturday night should be a rip-snorter with the Saunders Brothers in the house (www.saundersbrothersshow.com ), with their Maritime classics, other fun covers and original compositions providing just the starting point for their foot-stompin’ brand of entertainment. So, racing or not (and we hope you are!) come out for Saturday night festivities beginning with happy hour at 4:30 p.m., our annual BBQ at 5: 30 p.m., and the Saunders Brothers Show at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Racers- Registration begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday night and continues from 8:30-10:30 a.m. the next morning-- at which time you will have the opportunity to hoe into another one of Ed Bottrell’s hale, hearty and cheap SMAKR breakfasts. To get further details about SMAKR, check the SMSC home page (and see the SMAKR Stimulus Package on p. 9 of the current Rhumbline).

Addendum: GSA Search Consultants have returned  as Premier Sponsor for SMAKR 09 and we are sincerely grateful.   Charles Fraser not only provides a generous cash sponsorship from GSA, he also volunteers during our BBQ on Saturday and has recruited Ray MacDonald to assist with award presentations.  Sponsors provide an invaluable service to our annual regatta and we encourage all members to consider them first when you are making decision on goods and serves that you need throughout the year.  A request to all SMAKR attendees:  Shake the hand of sponsor this weekend and say "thanks for supporting SMSC".  It goes a long way.  Our Supporting Sponsors are, Benoit Electric, Goslings, Mark Doucette Photographic, North Sails, St Margaret's Bay Dental, Tim Hortons and White Sails Bakery.  We appreciate all they have done for us.

2.  And speaking of SMAKR Friday Night TGIF hosted by the Senior Fleet

Come out to this week’s TGIF hosted by the Senior Fleet in conjunction with the SMAKR weekend and get a feel for the buzz. This will be a great chance to see the new face of the Club and check out the new waterfront developments—such as the marina slips, the Performance Training Centre, and the breakwater/wharf (the outer portion being big enough to host a small dance party).

3.  The Worlds, The Worlds!

Brand new lasers will begin to roll in this week and that means that we need to really roll (apologies to all of you who have been rolling for more than a year now). There are still opportunities to get involved in this historic event both on and off the water, from August 30 to September 5th.  Please go to the web site http://can09.laserinternational.org/ or call 823 2211 if you can help – or know anyone that can.

4.  The New, All Improved, Rhumbline!

Please be sure to have a look at our redesigned Rhumbline, with extended coverage for The Worlds.  If it hasn't reached your mailbox yet, it should be there Tuesday or Wednesday. And, for those of you who are not on the mailing list, it should be available, in colour, on the SMSC.ca website by week's end.

5.  Chester Race Week

(Abbreviated from the Race Committee's Press Release).

Chester's Race Week weighs anchor for 2009- The largest keel boat regatta in Canada with a history of over 100 hundred years is scheduled for August 12th to 15th hosted by the Chester Yacht Club. In 2008 the organizers raised the bar by engaging world renowned yacht racer Andreas Josenhans, Bermuda’s Jay Hooper, and Ray Cambria of Chester’s Bluenose fleet to set and manage the race courses for Mahone Bay’s ever changing weather conditions. This successful program of 10 yacht classes on 3 different courses will be repeated for 2009. Yachts Regatta chair, Mary MacInnis said “we were extremely pleased with the program last year and will be building on that success for an even bigger and better regatta for 2009. There will be events for the public as well as participating sailors, including daily live music, dancing, and great food”.

For those who have had some sailing experience and wish to crew on one of the expected 160 yachts, they can check out the web site www.chesterraceweek.com

6.  Request for Accommodation
